Who is FOSSter?

Your virtual colleague.

FOSSter was founded and continues to be run by the team responsible for maintaining the Linux Professional Institute's exams and certifications.

Having provided training to individuals and businesses for over 21 years, we identified the clear need for an alternative to traditional classroom training. New system administrators learn best by working alongside experienced sysadmins in the field. Our one-on-one mentorship approach captures the essence of this virtually, in our self-paced, hands-on courses.

Every mentor at FOSSter is LPIC-3 certified and has worked as a system administrator in the real world.

How does it work?

Following your initial orientation with your mentor, you will begin your coursework on your own schedule. Your mentor is available to you by phone, email and instant messenger to answer questions, walk you through exercises, explain how technologies apply in the field, and convey best practices based on their own work as a system administrator.

Throughout your course you will be granted access to live Linux servers, where you will solve the same break/fix scenarios you'll encounter on-the-job. Your mentor will then review your work, not only for correctness, but also to see how you solved the problems. Often times in Linux system administration there are multiple ways to resolve an issue; our goal is to teach you the most efficient methods based on industry best practices.

Once you are certified and have moved on with your career, your mentor will continue to be available to you for a full year. You're free to reach out for career advice or on-the-job questions when you find yourself stuck on something. FOSSter is more than just training, we strive to ensure you realize a successful career in Linux and open source.
